A service like dropload?

13.07.2005 - 02:29 / filled under default

I am looking for a way to have a protected download for a friend who probably does not have a lot of options on his own server. ;)

Given: A pdf file. Wanted: A way to send of a unique link so people can download it from there but not to be accessible without that link

Dropload seems nice, but it does as it says - drop the file after it is downloaded once.

Any suggestion and hints are appreciated.

  1. You might want to try SpinXpress at http://www.outhink.com, not quite what your talking about but pretty close... disclaimer: Dave and Markus are good friends of mine, but I still think the software is great!

  2. He could hyperlink to a php script somewhere that redirects to the secret location of the pdf file only if the HTTP_REFERER is correct.

  3. Why not just use a .htaccess protection?

  4. Guys, think simpler. :)

Chris, that is interesting, but needs to have his computer running.
Seth that would need a nice admin programm also - clickable.

Michael: to complicated for giving out pdfs regulary to different people.

As I said: Like dropload, as simple as that. ;)

  5. Just try free gmx-service. You have a "Media Center Space of 1GB" You can upoad every file... And protect it with a password ... than you can send an e-mail with the link and password you can make it accessible for 10 days / 30 days or forewer...

  6. http://www.ourmedia.org/

Try OurMedia...they say they store forever, no catches

  7. The catch would be - as far as I know - that there is no protection of the files there, which is needed in this case. But thx. for the suggestion.

  8. Encrypt the file. Communicate the password to the receiving party and use http://www.yousendit.com/ to send it.
