I take the one with the milk box attached ...

25.04.2005 - 21:41 / filled under default

Seth judges people on their choice of coffee - or better, which kind of machine they used:

I noticed that people didn't choose which machined based on caff vs. decaf. Nope, they picked based on a machine.

If your worldview says, "I like gadget, premium, hyped, tweaky coffee" you went for the fancy machine. If your worldview was, "I like to settle, take no risks and be safe and predictable with my coffee" you took the other. It didn't matter which was better. It didn't matter which cost more. It mattered what you had decided before you even got there.
Nice idea, but with a major flaw in it.

If you would give me the choice - and visit his blog for an image - me too would go for the machine. Regardless if one is decaf or not. But not because of the fancy machine but because of something this fancy machine does, which a regular coffee pot does not have:

Milk. You will never find me drinking pure coffee, you will always find me drinking coffee and milk, 50:50. I don't like the taste of coffee, I only like the taste of milk and coffee. No cream, no surrogate, milk. Such a machine usually comes with milk boxes attached, and you can heat up the milk so your coffee won't get too cold.

And especially if you go for the no risk version, you go to the fancy machine - such a full automat always produces the same amount of water and coffee beans, therefor you will always know what you get. Having used one of those machines once, you will immediatly know how to handle the amount of water for your coffee mug.

The machine looks like a jura btw, which also can have different amounts of coffee pulver.

So while the assumption is nice, the comparison of coffee pot full of decaf and fancy machine = feshly brewed coffee as my kind of worldview is somehow not very convincing.

Plus the taste of fresh brewed coffee is usually more tasteful than a normal coffee pot. Made that normal coffee in the normal pott and decaf in the fancy machine, I still would have chosen the "fancy one" - except it would be early in the morning.

But if the line to get to a coffee was very long, I would have taken one out of the pott, to get my coffee. So - next time Seth, don't make such simple assumptions.
